10" 250mm AISI W2 tool steel honyaki* kiritsuke, tested to 65HRC, in my extra-extra-heavy geometry. This knife is a traditional Japanese kiritsuke, with my own deisgn and performance twists. It weighs in at 11.8oz (334g), and has a 66mm tall heel height. The weight, as well as the tall, long blade...allows for extreme forward weight, giving the user a perceived effortless sensation in slicing and chopping. The 66mm heel height gives greater leverage when rock chopping, and a more pronounced bounce off the board when push or pull cutting. Food release, board clearance, and overall feel are beyond excellent.
The handle is my XL (extra-long) Western Hybrid geometry, which has been argued to be my most visually stimulating, as well as my most comfortable handle to date. Handle materials are solid G10, my own 'Black Pearl' resin, and nickel silver. Also included is a matching hand made black leather saya.
This knife is ALL ABOUT contrasting textures, and cutting as aggressively as it looks. It's been described as 'going 100mph sitting still'...and I have to agree with that assessment. It is a study in black. The blade was polished to 8000 grit, then brushed with three separate grits of belt to create a mottled vertical texture on the surface. It was also subjected to a forced patina to both bring out the minimalist hamon, and provide the grey/black surface that contributes to the intended overall visual effect (like all carbon knives, this patina will develop and change with your specific use over time...also part of the intended design). The handle is a contrast of angled and flat visual cues...both shiny and matte, smooth and 'rough', diagonal and vertical, angular and curved. The natural, organic texture of the saya, with the deeply to shallow burned logo, were the final strokes to complete the aesthetic package I was reaching for.
I hope that you are able to appreciate it as much as I appreciated the opportunity to make it!

*'Honyaki' is a Japanese term describing a method of forging a knife from one single material, almost always high-carbon steel, and quenched in oil (abura-honyaki) or water (mizu-honyaki) with clay to yield a soft, shock absorbing spine and hard edge for high sharpness. This process, when done correctly, also results in an exquisitely beautiful, permanent line in the blade...that can be polished in such a way as to visually describe the variance of crystalline structures that are the only true indicator that the process was successful.
